March 2008 Archives

And so it begins.

I am starting to...

Wonder if my Chinese teachers think it is rude to wear sandals...Sweat while doing the dishes...Consider replacing all my clothes with ones made out of CoolMax...Sleep without any covers...Wish my hair was long enough to make a ponytail...Take lukewarm showers...Kill several mosquitoes in our apartment each day...Long for something cold to drink...Wear sun hats...Pack away the winter clothes...

It is getting hot. It is not quite April.

13 Month Update

As you know, Ellie had her one-year check-up last week, which resulted in the MMR which resulted in the fever which probably wasn't from the MMR but just some mystery virus. The fever is gone, the medicine is almost gone, but Ellie is still under the weather. We'll see how the weekend goes.

That's the bad news, the good news is that through this ordeal I learned TWO ways to say "vaccine" in Chinese, yeah!

On the day of her check-up Ellie was all healthy and hale. She now weighs 25 lbs. (11.3 kg.), which is less that a pound more than her weight at 10 months--she is finally slowing down. She is 32 in. tall (81.5 cm) which means she is now tall enough for her growth chart that starts at 80 cm. Too bad I let her play with the little butterfly that you use to mark the current height, because I can't find it now. For those interested in percentages, this puts her in the 75-90% range for weight and >95% range for height. This is the first time she hasn't been >95% for both.

Ellie is getting better and better at walking. She is very confident in her ability and brave at the same time. She particularly loves walking up and down a little inclined sidewalk in our garden here. She also likes to practice walking up and down small stairs while holding my or Jason's hand for balance. I very rarely see her crawl to get from place to place, at this point I think I would be shocked if I did.

Even better than her new walking skill is the way Ellie's cognitive ability has just seemed to take off. She really understands almost everything I say to her, and she is learning new words at an amazing rate. She can point out her nose, ear, belly button and toes. She will point out mouth and hair on me, but not herself. When we read books I ask her, "Where is the flower/sun/tree/ball/etc.?" and she can correctly point to too many objects to list.

She doesn't say many words now, at least not distinguished ones (everything is "Dah" or "Buh"), but is developing a rather large repertoire of animal noises including those for dog, cat, fish, lion/tiger/bear, elephant, seahorse, cow, alligator and bird. I suppose to be fair the alligator is really a hand signal that she does (indicating chomping jaws). Speaking of signing, we were doing well with signing, then she finally learned the sign for "please" (I was so happy). Then once she realized this was the way to get what she wanted, "please" replaced ALL of her other signs (well, except for the sign for "milk" which really means "I want to nurse").

Ellie enjoyed books before, but now she looooves to read. I read all her books to her every day. Sometimes more than once. Jason reads all her books to her every day. Sometimes more than once. Her recent favorite is Dr. Seuss's ABCs and a book with photographs from Vermont. Her favorite animals are now elephants and lions, and she looks for them in every book (we have a suprising number of books with these animals in them, even the Vermont book has a statue of a mountain lion in it). I think we need to get some old National Geographics for her to look at because she loves animals and seems to like the real photographs better.

By far the cutest thing is to see her reading to herself and doing what the book says. For example, we have a book on body parts, and she will turn to the page about belly buttons and lift her shirt and point to her belly button. We have another book that has you do certain motions, and she will turn to the page that says, "The seal claps his hands" and start clapping. It is very cool to see her knowing and learning and remembering. Very cool.

Here she is reading one of her "special" books (i.e. not for unsupervised reading).

This book even has an elephant! (It is a picture of some African tribe killing an elephant to eat, but she doesn't know that yet.)

Another new habit, she likes to share her food with us. She will take a bite then hold it out for us to take a bite. We are still not sure if this is a control thing our just cute, we'll see if any eating struggles develop.

The Cottontails

We didn't really do anything special for Easter. Partly because we aren't sure how much of the basket, eggs, and chocolate bunny thing we want to do, partly because you can't really find that stuff very easily in Taiwan, and partly because we are lazy. Ellie ended up sick on Easter anyways, so it didn't matter.

We did, however, get some new fish to replace our old fish Fluffy who died last summer.

Say hello to Flopsy, Mopsy and Peter, the newest additions to our household!

Two Times to See the Doctor

| | Comments (1)
Last Wed. I took Ellie to the doctor for her one-year check-up. On Friday she got her first round MMR at the health department. On Sunday she had a fever. Boo.

Her fever hung around on and off for two days and none of us really got any sleep for two days and finally when I got a temperature reading of 103 on Tuesday we went back to see the doctor.

He said the fever might be a reaction to the vaccine or just a regular old virus. We are on the look out for a rash to develop, indicating Roseola--maybe (he said the Chinese word for "rose" and then one of the many words for "sickness", this is my best guess for rashy-kid-sicknesses).  He also gave her some medicine which is helping her sleep and keeping her fever away.

This isn't your bottle of pink amoxicillin, folks.
sick 2 - 2008-03-26 at 12-18-59.jpg Sick 1 - 2008-03-26 at 12-18-49.jpg

What am I supposed to do with this? How would you get this into a 13 month old? The instructions they gave me tell me to give it to her 4 times a day, after each meal and before bed. Of course Ellie's after dinner IS before bed. I finally decided to dump the powder into the bulb of a medicine dropper, add water then attach the dropper part.

I don't think Ellie likes the grittiness. When I was just giving her ibuprofen I would say, "OK, time for your medicine," and she would respond with a "Mmmm." Now she shakes her head and walks the other way.

Soon I'll post an update with Ellie's weight and height and other goodies, but for now I'll leave you with a picture of our pitiful little sick girl.

"Cuddling" her spiky balls. Go figure.

A Real Conversation

Kristie: (noticing Maria, my Russian classmate, tugging up her jeans) Are you losing weight?

Maria: Yeah, it's because, what is it called...Lent. I may need to buy some new clothes.

Kristie: Oh yeah, so what did you give up?

Maria: (looks confused) Well pretty much everything.

Kristie: Everything! I thought you would say candy or soda. (Finally realizes that Maria is Russian Orthodox, and so very likely has different Lent practices.) So what is Lent like in the Russian Orthodox Church? I only know that Roman Catholics can't eat meat during Lent.

Maria: Yes, no meat, no eggs, no cheese, no milk...

Kristie: (eyebrows raised) Wow!

Maria: ....and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday we can only eat vegetables or fruit that aren't cooked, on Tuesday and Thursday we can have cooked vegetables, but they can't be cooked in oil, then on Saturday and Sunday we can eat like a normal vegetarian. This goes on for...49 days.

Kristie: (thankful she isn't  Russian Orthodox) You can only eat raw fruit and vegetables three days a week for seven weeks?! No wonder you're losing weight. (remembering that the Russian Orthodox Church also has a different calendar) So how much longer do you have?

Maria: This is the second week.

Kriste: Yeah, you may need to buy some new clothes.

Happy Easter!

He is Risen! He is risen indeed!

Today our church baptized three new believers. Two were husband and wife who have two very young children. How exciting to see a new young family acknowledging their Lord and Savior and starting their Christian journey together. The wife kept repeating over and over that the peace and joy of Christ are real peace and joy.

Praise God that we worship a God who is living! Who is not made of wood or stone. Who created the world and everything in it. Who has victory over sin and death. Who offers real peace, real joy, and real hope.

Christ the Lord is risen today! Alleluia!

Into the "Wild"

Last Saturday we went with a group from our church to Xitou, in the mountains of Taiwan. Of the places I have been in Taiwan, Xitou is one of my favorites. The air is fresh, the forest is lovely, the fog is romantic, and the hike is pleasant.

Fresh Air - 2008-03-15 at 14-43-45.jpg

This is how excited Ellie was to go to Xitou....
xi tou 1 - 2008-03-15 at 09-49-30.jpg
...in truth, I was this excited too.

Ellie thought this grassy hill (if I can even say hill, it was a very gentle slope) was the best. She loved walking down it, just on the verge of losing control and falling down. This made Jason excited to teach her how to ski.

Chinese people like things to be regimented organized, so we spent the entire morning playing group games. We made a circle and tried to throw a ball out of the ring through other peoples legs, tried to pop the balloons tied to other peoples ankles without having our balloons popped, did relay races, tried not to get caught by London Bridge falling down, and more!

This is all the fun we had playing games...

There was also a photography contest, who could take the best picture from our day at Xitou. While announcing the rules the judge said that Ellie was really cute and encouraged everyone to take pictures of her, plainly implying that a picture of Ellie would win. The results aren't out yet, we'll let you know if she wins.

Ellie ended up hiding from the paparazzi.

After game time we ate lunch and then had some hang out time to let our lunch digest before doing a little hiking.

xi tou 7 - 2008-03-15 at 13-53-18.jpg
Here we are hanging out.

Ellie wouldn't cooperate with our plan for a family photo. What she really wanted to do was keep walking up and down the little stairs that were in the courtyard outside the cafeteria. We held hands and we went up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down...she wouldn't. get. tired. When I made her stop to take the picture she cried, so we had to distract her with a Rubik cube.

The hike was by far the best part of our trip. It is a very easy, relaxing hike on paved roads and breathing fresh mountain air is soooo wonderful compared to being in the polluted city.

These girls walked with Jason and me, asking us questions about the US. On the left is Vivian, who loves American and wants to study there.

The pastor's wife with Ellie and me. (I don't know her name because in Chinese the pastor's wife is respectfully called "pastor's wife".)

There are lots more photos from our trip in our photo gallery.

Check out the sidebar to the right! For those of you who miss our old photo galleries, we got most of them fixed up and they are now linked to this page. We hope you like the new slide-show style.

We also have a lot of pictures that haven't yet been put into galleries, so be on the look out for new ones coming (hopefully) soon.

Ellie is sporting her first two major injuries. A busted lip and a skinned knee independently earned. I can't tell if they hurt her or not, she hasn't slowed down one bit.

A Real Conversation

Mr. Lin: So, are you accustomed to everything in Taiwan? (people are constantly asking this question)

Me: (thinking, "I don't think that's possible!") Well, not everything.

Mr. Lin: What things are you not accustomed to?

Me: For example, the weather is very different from what I am used to. (I always say this, it is a safe, unoffensive answer.)

Mr. Lin: (nodding understandingly) Oh yes, the winter is too cold!

Me: (laughing) Yes, the winter is cold, but also very short, the real problem is that the summer is too hot.

Mr. Lin: Right, it is hot in summer, but the winter is very cold!

To his credit, when cold fronts come, bringing temps in the 40s it can be quite cold due to the lack of indoor heating. This is usually rare and short-lived, while the summer is week after week of temperatures in the high 90s with 100% humidity and no relief.

And so we have entered the "spelling phase". You know, the one where you have to spell certain words lest your child hears them and demands to do that activity right then. That is, of course, until they figure out how to spell their favorite things. Luckily for Jason and I we have a second option, we can speak in Chinese! At least until Ellie learns Chinese too.

O-U-T - 2008-03-14 at 15-10-39.jpg

Our hot word right now is "outside". Whenever we say "outside" Ellie rushes over to the door and stands there, waiting for us to take her out. In this picture she is even making the sign for "please", as if to say, "Please Mom, can we please go outside?"

In truth, Ellie will go stand by the door whenever she decides she wants to go outside. If we don't notice her she will bring her shoes to us. She positively loves to go outside and I often find her waiting by the door.

Ellie's ability to comprehend the things we say continually amazes me. The other day I was carrying her in the backpack and picked a wildflower for her to hold. I told her it was a flower and that it smelled good. The next thing I hear is, "Snifffff....sniffff." She was smelling the flower!

Brand New Shoes

Ellie has been walking for a couple of weeks now and finally has her first pair of shoes.

She is such a big girl too.

Last month when she turned one I said in my mommy-heart, "She's still a baby, she won't really be a toddler until 18 months." Then she started walking a week after her birthday, and got in her top front teeth, and said her first real word ("ball"), and is suddenly so much more mature, and her face even seemed to thin out some, that I can't deny the facts any more...my baby is a baby no more, she is really a toddler.

We also have the tantrums to prove it, heh.

Welcome!

| | Comments (2)
Hello everyone! and welcome to the new fareaststreet.com. We have decided to change from a photo gallery to a full out blog because we were feeling that the photo journal was a little inaccessible (too many clicks to get to what you want to see) and restrictive. We would like more freedom to post on all different types of subjects and to write about things that don't have pictures.

There is a lot of content already on the blog starting from back in January! If you want, you can start reading the archives here. If you don't feel like going back to read all the archives, at least make sure not to miss the posts about Ellie's first birthday and our Chinese New Year celebration.

Explore around and tell us what you think.

dusting - 2008-03-07 at 14-21-24.jpg

On Fridays Ellie and I dust the house and then vacuum. Dusting is Ellie's second favorite chore to help with. Her favorite chore is folding laundry, she likes to fling herself onto a pile of unfolded laundry fresh out of the dryer. Then she will hand me items so I can fold them.

How to Have Fun

|
Last night after dinner Jason and I were lying on the living room floor having rest time before the bath-pajama-nurse-get Ellie to sleep ordeal routine started. Ellie had wandered off to another part of the apartment. Suddenly we hear a giggle, then a squeal of excitement.

This is what came around the corner towards us:

Mom's Hat - 2008-03-06 at 18-15-07.jpg

Wearing my sun hat, crazy walking without being able to see, and running into things had Ellie tickled. She was quite pleased with herself for stumbling (heehee) across this idea. We thought it was pretty darn cute too.

How to Drink

cup 1 - 2008-02-24 at 13-27-57.jpg
Ellie has started getting pretty good drinking out of her cup. She does have a bad habit of dumping her cup upside down when she finishes drinking, so I still have to limit her to one sip at a time.

cup 2 - 2008-03-02 at 08-15-30.jpg
She wants to apply her drinking skill to her food. After trying her spoon, then her fingers, Ellie decided this was the most practical way to eat her yogurt.

Reading Chinese?

| | Comments (0)
Reading 1 - 2008-03-02 at 16-11-31.jpg
This sweet picture is of Ellie reading her current favorite book. She likes it because there are lots of things she can point to in each picture.

Reading 2 - 2008-03-05 at 15-39-34.jpgIt is a Chinese kids book that some of our friends bought for Jason and I when we first started studying Chinese (I can still learn words from it!). It is designed to teach Chinese kids the English words for everyday objects, although some of the English is a little off (like "turning shovel" instead of "spatula").

Ellie likes to point to the objects in each room. She has even learned to recognize the names of some of the objects. We can ask, "Where is the ball?" and she will point to it. She can do this for "ball", "doll", "car", "airplane", "blocks" and "flower".  I don't think we'll teach her "turning shovel"!
