Hualian Winter Break Day 3

On our third and final day in Hualian we had some real country fun (minus the bonfire). A trip to the farm and playing in the river.
Jason and I both grew up in places where dairy farms are part of the daily scenery, so it felt right to us that we should take Ellie to [...]

A Real Conversation

One of Jason’s classmates invited us over to have dinner with his family on Chinese New Year. As a way of saying thank you we brought back a little gift of candy from Hualian. This is the conversation I had with the classmate’s wife, Meng-li, when I brought the candy.
Meng-li: (Opens door) Oh, Hi Kristie!
Kristie: [...]

Hualian Winter Break Day 2: The Beach

We left Taroko Gorge and headed to the seashore to finally fulfill our promises to Ellie.  But we had to eat lunch first. Xi-pan held onto her little sand pail all through lunch. Ellie ate, but she did it quickly, then hopped down and proclaimed, “Ellie all done. Now go beach!”
Lunch warrants mentioning, because [...]

For Lack of a Proper Nesting Instinct

To all of you belly doubters out there, see for yourself (37 weeks):
It’s big, it’s heavy, it makes it hard for me to sleep at night, (but for some reason I don’t have any trouble napping during the day…). And as far as I can tell it’s only going to get bigger before it [...]

A Flower for Sunday

I will lift up my eyes to the hills–From whence comes my help?My help comes from the LORD,Who made heaven and earth.Psalm 121:1,2

Hualian Winter Break Day 2: Taroko Gorge

For our second day of Hualian fun we woke up at 4am, packed into the van and drove to Taroko Gorge. To cut down on holiday traffic the powers that be were closing the place down to outside traffic starting at 7am. We weren’t about to be limited to commuter buses and walking. No, not [...]

Hualian Winter Break Day 1

Three days after Chinese New Year we hopped on the train and headed south and east toward Hualian. The train ride was four hours. Our first stop (err, after a quick lunch at McD’s) was the beautiful Far Glory Hotel.
Now if that doesn’t make you want to come to Taiwan, nothing will. [...]

A Real Conversation

In honor of Lantern Festival, Ellie was given a little cow-shaped paper lantern (because this is the Year of the Cow) last week in Sunday School.
Ellie: (holding her cow lantern) Daddy say, “I little cow. Here armpit. Here head!”
Jason: (with a look of some confusion) Okaaayy, You’re a little cow, here’s your armpit, here’s [...]

Coming Soon (I Promise)

Later this week, after a wonderfully funny Real Conversation tomorrow, I am hoping to put up some posts about our recent trip to Hualian.
Jason and I have wanted to go visit Hualian ever since we moved to Taiwan. Everyone says it is one of the most beautiful places in Taiwan, and it is.
I [...]
