Hualian Winter Break Day 2: Taroko Gorge

posted by Kristie
20 Feb 2009

For our second day of Hualian fun we woke up at 4am, packed into the van and drove to Taroko Gorge. To cut down on holiday traffic the powers that be were closing the place down to outside traffic starting at 7am. We weren’t about to be limited to commuter buses and walking. No, not us! We got there at 6:30am and breezed on in. :)

“Good morning, bright and early from Taroko Gorge!”

Finally….introducing our hosts, the Lin family:

Hong-zhe, Xiang-yi, and Xi-pan Lin.
Arriving that early certainly had its rewards, including crisp, fresh mountain air and a chance to see the sun breaking across the mountains.

It’s hard to do justice with a photograph, but in this picture you can somewhat see how steep and narrow the gorge is.

As stunning as the mountains were, I think the best time was had in a little field where we stopped to rest and picked wildflowers and played Ring-Around-the-Rosie.

Amy, another CES (China Evangelical Seminary) student, came with us to Hualian. She is one of Ellie’s favorite people here.

I think this picture is hilarious. I’m sure we are watching Ellie. Do we look much like parents?

This time Ellie hugged back.

Another benefit to arriving at Taroko Gorge at 6:30am is that you are ready to leave by lunch time and still have half the day left for more fun.

Ellie and Xi-pan, so cute in the van playing and giggling as we headed for our next adventure…
