Hualian Winter Break Day 2: The Beach

We left Taroko Gorge and headed to the seashore to finally fulfill our promises to Ellie.  But we had to eat lunch first. Xi-pan held onto her little sand pail all through lunch. Ellie ate, but she did it quickly, then hopped down and proclaimed, “Ellie all done. Now go beach!”

Lunch warrants mentioning, because it was really good, and because it was the only good meal we ate on our trip. We had, of course, seafood.

Instead of menus they had plastic buckets full of fish sitting in front of the restaurant.

And then, after we all ate our fill of yummy yummy fish, we were headed to the beach. Poor Ellie. First we had to make a little side trip to a store to get some diapers because she’d used all the diapers I brought for the day by lunch time.

THEN, it was finally time for the beach.

I don’t think she could get any happier.

Every day since then Ellie has asked to go to the ocean and beach, only to get the response, “I’m sorry, but we can’t go today.” She finally started pretending that mommy and daddy’s bed is the ocean. I’m so thrilled to see her imagination growing and getting more vivid. Now we go to the ocean and swim and play and ride our boats whenever we want.

Xi-pan wasn’t so crazy about the waves, she really just wanted to play with her bucket.

As you can see, the beach was all rocky. And not sand with a lot of rocks on it, but all rocks. Jason said it hurt his feet, but seeing as how I wasn’t the one chasing after Ellie, I didn’t mind it too much. In fact, I kind of liked it. The rocks were super smooth, and pretty. But the best thing, we weren’t all covered in sand when it was time to leave!

Ellie cried when we had to drag her, shivering, out of the water.

Some of you may be wondering why we let Ellie get in the water when, judging from our clothes, it looks like a cool day. It was only chilly in the mornings and evenings, and in the mountains, but we all were dressed wrong. We had 80 degree weather while we were in Hualian. I’m wearing a turtleneck for goodness sake! I was really hot.

One wet baby, one wet daddy, one mommy who wishes she could’ve gone in too. One happy family.
