Bat! Bat! Fly under my hat
And I’ll give you a slice of bacon.
And when I bake I’ll give you some cake,
If I’m not mistaken.
Owls have been tabled for a bit and we moved on to BATS!
Although, may I just mention that I had my website up on the computer one day and Abram sees the picture of Ellie’s owl I had posted. He points right at it and says, “Owl! Owl!” Shows what I know, huh?
Ellie had loads of fun making these little bats. I drew the wing shape and she did the cutting. Pasting on the felt bodies was so much fun that Ellie said she wanted to make ten bats. We only made three because Ellie was “too tired” to cut out more than one bat. I ended up doing the eyes and ears because it was super tricky to get them to stick on the felt (and not your fingers). Then we made a moon and stars to help us remember that bats wake up and fly around at night.
I picked up a couple of books about bats at the library. One of them, Bat Loves the Night—which is a lovely book with beautiful illustrations, vivid imagery and lots of facts written in the margins—informed us that most bats eat insects but some eat fruit, fish, frogs and blood. I asked Ellie what kind of food we should make for our bat. Her choice? Blood. I think we may try moths instead.

I must make that journey with you to the City Library. Sounds like there are a great many good books on offer there.
I love the bats, too. Maybe Ellie can make a special red moth or she may forget what she choose.
